Biodynamic farming and sustainable business practices
While biodynamic, organic and sustainable farming have become
popular in the last few years, at Braeside Farms we have focused on
these concepts and incorporated them into our farming practices since
our inception.
- We view our farm as a diverse “organism”. Incorporating Biological Diversity, Crop Management, and Permaculture into every aspect of the farm.
- We combine livestock management, composting, cover cropping, and crop rotation to maintain healthy soil fertility.
- We raise animals humanely and see them as an integral part to the farm. Providing them open and protected spaces to live in as well as feed and healthcare free from antibiotics, GMO’s and synthetic pesticides.
- We use biodynamic preparations to improve the health and vigor of the farm.
- We manufacture 25% of our fuel on the farm in the form of homemade biodiesel using waste oil feed stock from Estacada.
- All of our buildings have been constructed or retrofitted for energy efficiency and reduced dependence on off-farm inputs.
- All daily electricity is produced using renewable energy produced on the farm or supplied by PGE’s green energy program.
- Our water is pumped using farm-generated solar power.
- We are expanding our small methane digester system to supply backup heat for our 3000 square feet of greenhouses.
- 90% of our fertilizer is derived from compost made here on the farm.
