Farm News 8/25/09: Slow and easy

by Michael on August 25, 2009

This week the farm has been slow and easy. That is to say, the weather was perfectly normal. We had some rain a bit of sun and a nice breeze as well as a couple of clouds. We had few pest problems and all of the animals were content to eat, rest and cause the fewest of problems. We like slow and easy!

Animals and Eggs:

You have probably begun to develop a storage of eggs by this time of year. Between, summer events, and the end of summer parties, it is likely that similar to us, you have a dozen sitting around that you are wondering what to do with. We suggest you do what we have done. Make custard. It is a a perfect way to use them up and it is so refreshing on a summer’s evening.

Fruit:

Blackberries are now in the share. (And they go great on top of custard.) They are almost at their peak sweetness so watch out for a few tarter ones. We should be increasing the quantity up to 2 pints per week as we move to fall. Also, apples are just about ready and they should be in the share next week.

Greens:

Kale, collard and broccoli greens are in the share this week with the large tender leaves now in full swing. We anticipate lettuce again in the next 2 weeks as the crop is in full swing as well.

Herbs:

Spearmint is back in the share and has the most fantastic aroma at this time of year. There is enough to make tea for those hot evenings when something refreshing is in order. If you a looking for something a little more potent, then check out the sangria recipe.

Vegetables:

Storage onions will remain in the share for another few weeks as leeks take shape and prepare for a fall harvest. Garlic too will remain for several more weeks. Tomato and cherry tomato are in the share as well with the farm overflowing with these fruits. We have a tomato based gazpacho for this week. Cucumbers and squash continue to produce well and should be used while the supplies last.
