Freak Snow Storm Boggles Harvest

by arika on March 1, 2011

After getting 8″ of snow in 4 hours we realized the harvest was doomed so we rescheduled for March 22.  Luckily we have the early spring green starts protected in the cold frame greenhouse so they didn’t get buried!  Temperatures dipped into the low teens last week but our Asian greens survived.  The variety we like is called China Express, available through Territorial Seeds- it’s just as scrumptious as bok choy.  We also planted Oregon Sugar Pod II sweet peas into the greenhouse for spring harvest.

Gardening tip:  For spring pea shoots, plant peas now under cover.  The tender stems can be harvested in early May & are perfect for hot wok cooking or soup.  Simply trim the curling stems when they reach about 5-7 inches off the ground.

The over-winter onions look great in the greenhouse & in April they’ll be harvested for “spring onions”-similar to scallions.  Our apple propagation has begun!  We took cuttings from our favorite tree earlier this year & now we just need to identify it.  We’re going to ask the Home Orchard Society for ideas but if you’re an apple variety connoisseur let us know & we’ll send you a picture for i.d.

A small brown bat has made it’s way into our farm house so we know spring is just around the corner.  We named it “Rodeo” because of it’s ability to avoid capture!  Stay tuned…………..
