Last weekly share for 2009, fall is here!

October 27, 2009

We are now moving to winter harvests.  With delicious cool season crops starting to become ready to pick.

Animals and Eggs

The chicken’s light when out in the chicken coop this week and so, the chickens thought we we suddenly in winter.  So, unfortunately we don’t have eggs this week.  We will however have them for the winter.  Additionally, the pigs will be at the butcher by next week and we will have them cut up and wrapped by November 24 when we deliver the first winter share.

Greens

Salad mix has been tasty but slower than normal for this time of year as we had quite a few temperature swings as we went into fall.  Red sales, brunia and oak leaf have been in the mix.  We will have more diversity in the mix as early as November, with the green house crops doing well right now.

Fruit

Apples and quince are in the share this week.  Don’t forget to cook quince very well as it really reaches peak flavor once it has had a chance to breakdown its strong “rose hip” fibers.

Vegetables

Potatoes are in the share this week and we believe we have located the zone on the farm where we planted the brown rot laden seed potatoes.  There may be some other pockets but it should be limited unless we got more than one batch of poor seed.  Onions and garlic continue to be in the share as well as pumpkins.  So eat up!
