Snow is falling in the mountains but the CSA still provides!

October 20, 2009

It has become much cooler and the mountains are starting to get a bit of snow in the cascades.  This is great for the water storage we need here in the northwest.

Animals and Eggs

We finally got a butcher date for the pigs.  After the fiasco with the truck breaks going out, we are happy to be able to get a slot with Mt Angle Meats.  We are glad to have power back after loosing it last week.  So, eggs are back in the share.

Herbs

Two herbs we have been really interested in providing in shares are lemon grass and horseradish.  This week we had a nice lemon grass harvest.  It is such a wonderful citrus scented and flavored crop, especially for the northwest.  Use it in simple soups and any type of sauce.  Our horseradish crop last year was still quite week but is improving.  We hope to have horseradish in the share with pork in late November.

Fruit

Quince is one of our favorite fruits.  Quince is essentially a rose and hence has massive aroma and visual appeal!  Every time we harvest quince, we feel like it could be grown just for the wonderful smell it imparts on the entire room in which it is sitting.

Vegetables

Potato is in the share this week.  We will have Yukon Gold potato as long as they store well.  Winter squash, tomato, eggplant, hot pepper, and bok choy are also in the share.  The most exciting of these is the eggplant.  This can be one of the most challenging crops for us up here at 1250 feet in elevation.  However, now that we have tricked the crop into production, we think we have a good formula for getting them to do so next year as well.  Hopefully with some really turn out on production.
