Warm Weather is back after cold snap!

October 13, 2009

With summer like weather lasting into the first week of October, we are excitedly harvesting a late planting of green beans and bell peppers.

Animals and Eggs

Unfortunately, last nights wind storm knocked out the power to the farm.  We have a backup generator but have not installed a transfer switch to run the water pump yet.  So, with no water, we could not wash eggs, so there are no eggs this week.  They will be back in next weeks share.

Fruit

After so many posts stating that all of our apples had been lost to coddling moth, we were surprised to find that we actually had a few that had escaped the pests.  So enjoy apples with a bit of pumpkin pie this weekend.

Greens

Just like with the eggs, because the power is out, we could not wash the greens this week.  They will be in the share next week.

Herbs

We are just about out of shallot as of this week.  We will be have small garlic the next several deliveries however.  It is not too late to harvest mint so we will continue to do so as long as it looks like it has good quality.  Finally, Basil is on its last harvest or so, but it still looks and tastes great so, we had to add it to the share!

Vegetables

Pumpkins are now here as well as the last of the tomatoes and cucumbers. We also are still have storage onion which get stronger by the day.  As for the potatoes, we have a section of the beds where the potatoes have really bad brown rot.  This is a virus that gets to the tubers and makes for a yucky looking rot in the flesh.  We have culled all of the potatoes we can find that have gotten rot but we may have missed a few.  So, if you find a bad one, don’t panic, it will not hurt you, just throw it away.  These should not be composted as, the rot is carried over from year to year in the soil.  We believe, we got it from a portion of our seed being bad not from it being in our soil.
