We are not sure if it is the cold weather or the need we have for a vacation but even our pickup was out of sorts this week. The breaks went out on the same day that the lights when out on the delivery wagon. So, the pigs will not get to the butcher this week. And the farming goes on!
Animals and Eggs
The pigs did not make it to the butcher this week as planned. Because the breaks on thepickup truck began to fail and we were unable to get the pigs loaded and to the butcher. We will be rescheduling for a few weeks from now so we can get the pork to you sooner rather than later. In the mean time, the chickens continue to lay with the rainy weather not bothering them too much. We are planning a second round of meat chickens this fall which will be ready in December or January.
Fruit
We do have grapes this week. These are interlocken varitey and one of our favorite fresh eating grapes. They are a bit spicy and very bright. They go well with cheese and we love them just straight up. If you take the time to juice them you will really notice the spices in this special cultivar.
Herbs
Shallot and garlic continue in the share this week. In the next few weeks we will be bringing you lemon grass. Bay and rosemary will also be ready in the next few weeks.
Greens
The cool weather and hard rain we had the last few days were a little rough on the lettuce and kale but they will both be in the share next week. We anticipate having greens most of the fall and winter as long as we don’t get any more hot days.
Vegetables
As you can see from you share, we are beginning the transition out of summer veggies into winter veggies. The last few weeks of tomatoes, tomatillios, and cucumbers are coming to an end and will be finished us as soon as we get a frost. (Usually by October 21 on the farm.) However, potatoes are starting to die back so we can begin to harvest them. She storage onions have kept well and will be in the share for the next several months. We are already getting ready for early spring and have begun to plant green onions. Pumpkins will be in the share as soon as our vines die back and they look to be delicious this year.
